We live in the wild west and our whole town consists of 63 people within a 10 mile circle of sorts. I am a one-room public school teacher of K-2nds (7 kids). I wanted to comment on your view on public jobs. In our area we use to be able to graze our cattle to control weeds and grass growth as well as manage animal habitats on a local antelope refuge. That changed in the 80's. Now the government controls all of this with fire management. Fire management has become an intense business for the government. God forbid a wild fire starts because they are not interested in putting it out or saving resources. They milk it for all it's worth, costing the tax payers millions of dollars a year. With every public employee that works for the Bureau of Land Management or the Forest Service comes the added costs of vehicles and their upkeep, office space, secretaries, and an exorbitance retirement, much like our congressmen and senators. There are added perks that the private sector does not have, for instance if you buy a house while working for the government and take a job with the government somewhere else, they will not only move you but purchase your house at top value - again all at the cost of the tax payers! There is nothing but cost in relationship to public employees. What if they were all private employees and companies were able to compete for contracting jobs. The perks and benefits of public employees is out of hand - at the cost of you and me!
